Every year the following National Teams are named as part of Australia’s Cross Country Skiing High Performance Program. Selection is based on performances over the previous year according to SSAXC’s Selection Policies.
The World Cup Team contains Australia’s best cross country skiers, who have not only qualified to compete on World Cup but demonstrated from their results that they are ready to rub shoulders with the world’s best. A World Cup field is usually tougher than any other competition, including the Olympic Winter Games and World Championships, as the strongest nations may start more athletes than they have a quota for at these other events.
Athletes on the Continental Cup Team have progressed beyond the performance level of the Junior and U23 teams and are on their way toward the World Cup Team. Competing mostly at Continental Cup and Nation Cup level, athletes on this team will have the opportunity to test themselves on World Cup from time time, and will typically also qualify to compete at the World Championship.
From age 20 to 23 is a critical phase in the development of an international cross country skier, as they move out of the junior ranks and are measured against the best athletes in the world. The U23 Team provides a 3-year window for athletes to build training volumes, gain international competition experience and progress to Continental Cup or World Cup Team level.
The Australian Junior Team is made up of the best athletes in the country under the age of 20. Australian Junior Team athletes are invited to take part in training camps throughout the year, and depending on their age and performance level may have the opportunity to compete at the World Junior Championship.
In addition to the National Teams above, Australian Teams are selected to compete in major international events including the Olympic Winter Games, World Championships, World Junior/U23 Championships, World Universiade Winter Games and Winter Youth Olympic Games. Criteria for selection to these events is also available in the Selection Section.
