Australian Championship Results – Perisher

The first events of the 2016 Australian Open Championship for cross country skiing took place at Perisher on the weekend of August 6-7. On the women’s side Lilly Boland from Ulladulla claimed her first Open Australian title in the 5km Freestyle, while Kat Paul from Taggerty  added a second Classic Sprint title to her win in 2015. In the men’s Classic Sprint Mark Pollock from Canberra double poled his way to his first national victory, but it was the 10km Freestyle that raised the most eyebrows with 2010 Winter Olympian Ben Sim winning his first Australian Championship since 2011.

Pub to Pub Wrap-Up

Now that was more like it!
114 skiers fronted up at 11 am Saturday in sunny cool conditions and looking forward to a fast track – and it definitely delivered!  After what must have been a really tight battle Cameron Morton – returning to the event for the first time in 9 years – managed to hold out regular winner Ben Derrick by 10 seconds with the 3rd fastest time on record of 27:47, while his son Damen made it a family affair coming in 3rd.  And continuing the family tradition, Darcie Morton had a great race to win the womens event (and coming 8th overall!) in 31:28 with Jillian Colebourn coming 2nd in her first try at the event with regular participant Irene Dunn in 3rd.  And of course there were plenty of mini races with a lot of tight finishes.  Most importantly lots of happy faces at the end!
Even a small laid back event like ours only runs with the help of a lot of people.  As always The General opened their doors to us to take registrations and provide the pre-race caffeine fix, while the Dinner Plain Hotel provided us with a great space for presentations.  A big thank you to Mt Hotham resort – as always the grooming crew of Greg, Noel and Neil deserve particular thanks for being able to present such a terrific trail given the way the season has panned out, and many thanks to all those who helped out on the trail patching efforts both this week and at other times during the season.  They also provide us with the essential support at the road crossing. Many thanks also to the Pub to Pub crew who only do one event a year but keep coming back year after year and always get the job done, and done very well. And a big thanks to sweep patroller Simon Head – another ingredient we couldn’t operate without.

In addition to the official timing, BNSC tested out a new timing system in preparation for the Hoppet in August. A novel feature of this system is that a video of either the start or the finish is linked to every participant.
