2021 AUS Winter Begins

June 29
Winter Update

About time” many may say, it’s almost the end of June and there hasn’t been a news post on AUSXC.com since February. Fair enough. If there are any budding young (or old) journalists out there keen to contribute semi-regular reports for AUSXC, they are more than welcome to get in touch via fmarsland@snow.org.au or call Finn on 0408147940.

Below are some recent reports / news updates that have been recently received, as well as a link to another recent cross country skiing story published on the Snow Australia website

Paddy Pallin Junior

With a strict Covid-19 safety plan in place, a format and activity modified Paddy Pallin Juniors cross country (XC) ski event was held on Saturday 26 June 2021 at the Perisher XC ski trails. Due to covid-19 restrictions participant numbers were down on previous years, but 10 centimetres of new snow overnight and the sun peeping through the clouds ensured the local and Canberra based children had an enjoyable experience.

Participants skied varying distances based on their age and ability, in soft ungroomed conditions, with the youngest age groups skiing approximately 600 metres and up to two and a half kilometres being skied by the fifteen year olds. The ski event was followed by a covid-19 safe jelly snake hunt that involved children individually finding pre-packaged bags of sugary goodness! The presentation of certificates and wonderful spot prizes donated by major sponsor Paddy Pallin were a hit with all participants. To wrap up the event, the traditional hotdog lunch was served with hotdogs and drinks provided by Paddy Pallin, breadrolls from Perisher Foodworks and fresh fruit from Snow Country Fresh Produce. Luckily the weather held, and all components of the event, including the presentation and lunch were held outdoors to ensure social distancing rules could be adhered by.

More details and times of the participants are included in this linked PDF.

Birkebeiner Classic Moved to 11th July

The Birkebeiner Classic, scheduled for the 4th July at Falls Creek, is postponed as there is not enough snow to set the tracks and run the race. It is too uncertain to wait until Friday’s predicted snowfalls to make a decision, so the plan is to hold the Birkebeiner Classic on Sunday 11th July instead. So get those skinny skis ready and waxed and head to the Nordic Bowl for a 10:30am start.

Registration is online only, on arrival at the Nordic Bowl check in via the QR code on the race hut, collect bibs in the Nordic Bowl and be self-sufficient with your food and drinks. Be Covid safe, maintain social distancing and wear a mask if needed.
