Swedish Junior Championships Preview

Anna Trnka, Casey Wright and Xanthea Dewez will compete in the Swedish Junior Championships which begin tomorrow the 10/1 and run to Sunday the 12/1.

The event is doubling as a World Junior Championship test event in which the Swedish World Junior Team will be selected. For our girls the races will be a 5km classic individual start on Friday, a skate sprint on Saturday and a 10km mass start skate on Sunday. The races were originally going to be held in Annaboda in Southern Sweden but due to the lack of snow in the south they were moved to Idre Fjall. The advantage of Idre Fjall is the one meter plus snow depth, the plentitude of groomed skiing and temperatures being around -10. The negative is the small stadium area which meant the skiathlon which was advertised as the Sunday race was changed to a skate mass start.

For Anna and Casey the goal this weekend is to finish in the top 20. A result that would hopefully work as a spring board to set up a top 30 result at World Juniors in two and a half weeks time. With 90 junior girls racing this will be a tough ask especially as Sweden is no second rate skiing nation. However it is something this group believes they can achieve.

For Xanthea these races are more about adaptation. Xanthea arrived in Sweden from Australia on Tuesday and will only have had two days of skiing before her first race on Friday. Although she has great belief the purpose of her racing is to provide race experience prior to her competing at World Junior Championships.

Live timing will be provided for Swedish Junior Championships on the FIS website, http://www.fis-ski.com. The events website will also provide up to date information including start list, results, course maps etc. http://www.orebroskidallians.se.
