Provisional National Teams 2013/2014

The provisional Cross Country Skiing National Teams for 2013-2014 have been released by SAXC, the cross country committee of Ski & Snowboard Australia.

Esther Bottomley, Callum Watson and Phillip Bellingham have been named to the World Cup Team, and Paul Kovacs, Aimee Watson and Anna Trnka have been named to the Continental Cup Team. Five of these athletes have their sights set on the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014 and will compete in World Cup benchmark selection events in December and January, while the only junior athlete in this group Anna Trnka will be focussing instead on the 2014 World Junior Championships in Val di Fiemme. This “Shadow Olympic Team” vying for Olympic selection will be led by World Cup Coach August Teague from the USA and National Team Head Coach / High Performance Manager Finn Marsland.

Including the National Squad and the Australian Junior Team, a total of 14 athletes will be invited to join the National Team.

In addition to provisional National Teams, SAXC is pleased to announce provisional teams for the 2014 World Junior Championship, the 2014 World U23 Championship, and the 2013 World University Winter Games (WUWG). All of these events will take place in Val di Fiemme in Italy; the Junior/U23 events at the end of January, and the WUWG in December. The Junior/U23 Teams will be led by the Coach/Manager combination of Nick and Lescinska Grimmer, while Ewan Watson is the Head Coach for the WUWG.

The full provisional team list is available in PDF format below. Note that team selection is subject to acceptance of the team  invitation by the athletes. It should also be noted that athletes can move up to the World Cup and Continental Cup teams during the northern hemisphere winter based on results in World Cup and FIS international competition, and that additional athletes may qualify for the major international events.

The World Cup season for Australia will begin in Davos in December, however a number of athletes will already be competing in lead-up events in November. Progress through the season can be following on AUSXC and also via team/athlete Twitter updates and athlete blogs on the right-hand side of AUSXC.
