Australia’s international ski marathon the Kangaroo Hoppet was held on Saturday August 27 at Falls Creek in north-east Victoria. The first skier across the line in the premier 30km Freestyle event was Petr Novak from the Czech Republic, making it the third time in the event’s 21 year history that a Czech skier has won. Double Australian Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley was the first woman home in the 30km, making it back-to-back Hoppet victories for the home-grown Mt Beauty skier. Continue reading
The classic distance races of the 2011 Australian Championship series were held yesterday Sunday August 21 at Perisher. The Open Women 5km Classic was won by Esther Bottomley 35 seconds ahead of Aimee Watson. The Open Men 10km Classic was won by Ben Sim 32 seconds ahead of Alex Almoukov. Lucy Glanville took the U20 Women 5km Classic title, finishing 3rd overall in the Open event, with Phillip Bellingham winning the U20 Men 10km event in 5th overall. Xanthea Dewez won the 5km U16 class, while only 7 seconds separated Damon Morton from Hamish Roberts in the U16 10km event. In the 2.5km events Matt Bull won the MU14, Sabrina Howell won the WU14, Jacob Stevens won the MU12, and Nelle Forster-Berghuis won the WU12.
The 2011 Australian Sprint Freestyle Championships were held at Perisher on Saturday August 20. The Open Women A-Final was won by Esther Bottomley ahead of the U20 Champion Anna Trnka, with 3rd place going to another junior Siobhan Jones. Callum Watson won the Open Men A-Final ahead of Ben Sim and Phillip Bellingham the U20 Champion. Continue reading
