Big Worldloppet Weekend – Vasaloppet, Bieg Piastow and Frauenlauf

The Frauenlauf is a 21km event for ladies that marks the opening of a week of activities leading up to the Switzerland’s Engadin Ski Marathon. Esther Bottomley finished 6th in a field of just over 800 skiers. The podium was an all Swiss affair with Karin Camenisch the winner followed by Julia Philipona and Rahel Imoberdorf.  Meanwhile up in Sweden 14 735 skiers started in the 90km Vasaloppet, the culmination of a week of ski events involving over 50 000 skiers

Swede Jörgen Brink took his second Vasaloppet win, edging out Stanislav Rezac (CZE) with Jerry Ahrlin (SWE) in third place. It was all Sweden on the women’s podium with Jenny Hansson, who had won the Tjevasen ladies race earlier in the week ahead of Susanne Nysstom and Sofia Bleckur. Four Aussies took part in Vasaloppet Week. Tim Blundy in the 45km HalvVasen, Mathew Curtis in the 90km  Oppet Spar andJason Nielsen and Rudi Pittl in the main race. Unfortunately for Rudi he did make the cut off time at the 71km mark in Hokberg and had to take the bus to the finish.

Also this weekend there was the 50km Bieg Piastow in Poland, where seven Australians appear in the results of the free technique event –  Paul and Sue Waller, Greg and Jenni de Freitis, Ronice Goebel, Malcolm McKinnon, and Marg Hayes who made it a double by doing the classic event as well.
