Falls Creek Sprint

Perfect weather greeted the unofficial Classic Sprint event held at Falls Creek today. Twenty-nine skiers participated in the 1.2km Time Trial around the Nordic Bowl, including ring-in National Team members Esther Bottomley and Nick Grimmer who recorded the fastest times.

The Victorian Junior Sprints were officially called off on Wednesday when it looked as though there wouldn’t be enough snow to run a championship level sprint competition with fair finals. The main difficulty was that the snow on some key sections of the track wasn’t deep enough for classic tracks. However there was enough snow to run a good time trial course using a single classic track, and makeshift two-person finals were held afterwards.

The showdown of the day was between Esther Bottomley and the fastest junior male Alasdair Tutt. Tutt took the lead up the first hill, then Bottomley came back to draw even in the final straight before Tutt dug deep to cross the line first. The biggest category was the junior women, with 14 competitors in the combined U20/U16 finals including a random senior woman and junior boy mixed in for good measure. The final between Anna Trnka and Ashleigh Spittle was also close, with Spittle just holding out for the win. Alex Gibson won the U16 junior men’s final ahead of Ben Kaye.
