The inaugural Snowy Mountains Nordic Family Cup made its debut on Saturday 2 September 2017 at the Perisher XC ski trails. Eleven teams battled it out over two events for the glory of being the first names on the winners’ shield. The competition was fierce, but the mood was jovial with the fancy dress component of the event adding some fun and frivolity!
This is the first competition run by Snowy Mountains Nordic, a locally based XC ski group that welcomes Snowy Mountains’ residents of all ages, skill levels and abilities. The aim of the event was to provide a fun event that encouraged participation with a family member. Team combinations included mother/daughter, mother/son, father/daughter, mother/father/daughter, siblings, aunt/niece and friends. Bonus time reductions were offered for the best fancy dress, with many an elaborate costume on display.
Competition included an uphill and downhill slalom, which began with a skis off Le Mans start and concluded with a flag race, as well as a snowball biathlon, in which teams had to make their snowballs prior to competition and complete penalty loops if their snowballs didn’t hit the targets.
Winners on the day were the mother and daughter combination of Carla and Zana Evans, followed by Kate and Hamish Greenwood in second place and Jesse and Finn Chatten in third. Special thanks must be extended to Garry MacDougall for his crafting of the winners’ shield and to local businesses Mountain Adventure Centre and Yoga Shala, as well as Snowy Mountain Nordic members, for donating prizes.
